You have three portfolios open and cannot decide between them. Start by describing what you want to remember: carefully composed portraits, your guests’ reactions, a lively party, or a balance of these moments. That sentence gives your search a useful direction.

Ask to see a complete story

A portfolio shows a photographer’s selected work. Ask to see a full wedding gallery they have permission to share, too. Look at preparations, the ceremony, guests and the evening. Do you like the photographs when the light changes? Is there room for people beyond the couple?

Choose examples relevant to your plans. If dinner will be indoors, reception photographs tell you more than a collection made entirely of sunset portraits. A full story helps you judge consistency rather than a single striking image.

Translate style into practical decisions

Natural, editorial and documentary can mean different things to different photographers. Ask how portraits actually work: how much time to allow, what direction you receive and when you return to your guests. You should understand the answer without knowing camera terminology.

Questions for the first conversation

  • Who will photograph our wedding?
  • Which hours and locations does the proposal cover?
  • How do we prepare portraits and family groups?
  • What happens if the schedule or weather changes?
  • Which deliverables, delivery times and expenses are specified?
  • How are booking and unexpected changes handled?

Use the answers to compare like with like. Coverage ending after drinks and coverage including the evening meet different needs. Read a written proposal and its arrangements before confirming.

When should you enquire?

Get in touch once you know your date and the outline of your locations. Every detail does not need to be settled. Availability belongs to a specific date; no universal booking window guarantees it.

If your wedding is soon, say so. If you are choosing between two dates, share both. An availability reply alone does not confirm a booking: follow the steps explained in your proposal.

Choose someone you can speak openly with

Explain what makes you uncomfortable, which relationships need care and when you want privacy. You should be able to ask questions and set boundaries. Clear communication is part of preparing the photographs.

Return to your original priorities before deciding. The right fit combines the photographs you want, a presence you trust and coverage that works for your plans and budget.
